A roof tent or rooftop tent is an accessory that may be fitted to the roof or bed of a motor vehicle that allows the users to sleep in relative safety and comfort above the vehicle, and leaves the internal load-space free. Roof tents are particularly seen on expedition-prepared four-wheel drive vehicles such as Land Rovers, but can be fitted to almost any vehicle. Generally, they will mount to a vehicle's roof rack or aftermarket roof bars.
Benefits of Rooftop Tent
You don't have to worry about tent stakes, running fly lines, or any of the other setup needed for most tents. Open the container, unfold the tent, and it's ready to use. Open by lifting the top of the container straight up so you have walls that are flush with the edges of the container. Others open into a more traditional tent shape. Packing the tent up is just as easy. You don't need to worry about collecting all the stakes, ropes, and other gear. You also don't need to fold it a certain way and roll it up to fit inside a packing bag. Everything folds up into the container so it's ready to set up again the next night or the next time you head out on a camping trip.
A car top tent gets you off of the ground, so you don't need to worry about animals or other critters paying you a visit in the night. You access the tent with a ladder, which you can fold up at night if you want to be extra sure you're out of reach.
A car tent is more comfortable than a traditional tent in several ways:
- You won't end up laying in a pool of water if it rains;
- You'll have better air circulation since air can flow under the tent as well as around and through it;
- The Roof Top Tent can provide a covered area for cooking or other activities underneath it;
It's also more secure since your tent is off the ground. You don't have to worry about people tripping over a fly line or kicking out a tent stake when walking around in the dark. This gives you more flexibility for picking a spot to camp as well. You probably wouldn't want to pitch a tent on the pavement, but being in a rooftop tent gives you more privacy and security.
Another factor that makes rooftop tents more comfortable and easier to set up is the built-in base. The metal base gives you a solid, flat sleeping surface so you don't need to worry about rocks, branches, or other debris underneath you while you sleep. It also helps you avoid low spots where water can collect if it starts raining in the night.
Rooftop tents have a built-in mattress that stays in place when you pack up the tent. You don't need to worry about inflating an air mattress or sleeping pad, and it doesn't take up any storage space in your vehicle. The built-in mattress is also more comfortable than most camping mattresses, especially the thin sleeping pads that many people use.
Being elevated gives you a unique view of your surroundings. If you're in a campground, you'll be able to see more of the surrounding landscape and if you're in a spot that has a particularly nice view, you can park your vehicle to give you the best possible line of sight. This can also help if you're in a crowded spot with lots of other tents around you, such as an outdoor concert, for example. If you're tenting at ground level, you'll only see the neighboring tents, but when you're elevated, you can see over the top of them all.
Having your tent off the ground also means you don't need to worry about mud, animal droppings, or anything else making a mess of it. You won't need a groundsheet and won't need to set everything up again once you're home to give it a thorough cleaning. Even if the tent gets wet, it's easy to open it up to let it dry once the weather improves.
Application of Rooftop Tent
Wake Up to Spectacular Views
In traditional camping, you can sleep under the stars all over the country. But you're still restricted to places where you can set up and anchor a tent. With a rooftop tent, you can pull over just about anywhere and enjoy roadside camp spots.
Live the Van Life Without the Van
Not all of us can afford a full van decked out to the nines. On the other hand, some of us have regular jobs (gag) that keep the van life out of reach. A rooftop tent allows you to live the van life when it suits you, and still have a normal car when it's time to head to the office. And when you're ready to quit the 9 to 5, your rooftop tent-rigged car will be ready for life on the road. Throw in a camping stove and a mobile Wi-Fi unit and you're ready to roll in true van life style.
Camping in Style at Music Festivals
Camping at music festivals is more popular than ever. Multi-day festivals include onsite campgrounds as part of the package, fostering a community of like-minded nature & music lovers. But without a roof nest, you still have to show up early and set up your tent before the first band kicks off their set. Then after days of partying (and little to no sleep), you've got to pack up your tent, poles, anchors, and bedding before you can head home. With a hard-shell rooftop tent, you can park and head straight to the front row. Don't worry about setting up your tent — it'll only take you a couple of minutes to pop it open at the end of the night, especially since you can store your bedding in your roof nest, even when it's closed. Plus, your rooftop tent gets you heads above the hustle and bustle of festival goers, which means you can snag a killer view of your favorite band rocking out.
Waiting in Line for Product Drops and Tickets
Whether you're a tech fan, have a sneaker obsession, or are a sucker for front row tickets to Broadway shows, it seems there's always something exciting on the calendar. Depending on your passions, you might be camped out for 8 to 12 hours, or even overnight. With a rooftop tent, you've got an urban camping getaway so you and your friends can take turns holding your place in line. While one person waits in line, the rest of you can read, snack, party, or sleep on top of your car!
Sleep for Free While Traveling
If you've ever driven across the US, you know it's a long, long drive. Even just a drive from Chicago to New York takes two days (assuming you want to sleep at some point). A rooftop tent affords you a handy place to catch a few z's without having to spend the money on a hotel.
How to Install Rooftop Tent
Remove your Roof Top Tent from the box and lay out all the included components.
To attach the alloy support rails to the bottom of the rooftop tent simply grab a bolt with a washer through the holes already in the floor of the rooftop tent, place the rail over the part of the bolt poking up and then slide a nylon locking nut into position and tighten.
Once you've mounted the support rails, flip the tent over so you can install the ladder. Position the two brackets for your ladder slide, slide two bolts with washers through each of the holes, then place a washer and bolt on top and tighten. Move your ladder into position and thread the provided bolts and washers through the hole on each side before tightening with a washer and nut.
Before lifting the rooftop tent onto your racks, ensure you've got the correct orientation (which way the tent will fold open). Place your rooftop tent onto your racks and move it into the desired position, once in the desired position grab the mounts and slide two bolts through each. Prop your rooftop tent up and slide all the mounts in for one side of the tent, then you'll need to position the bolts over your roof bars or the structural part of your roof rack. Lower your rooftop tent back down once you're happy with the position of the bolts and add the steel bars and tighten them up.
Finally, you can put the rubber caps on the end of the support rails, place your accessories back into the tent, then put on the heavy-duty cover. Make sure you tuck in your canvas, then use the strap to keep everything nice and compact.
Thread the stitched in sail track edge along the side of the rooftop tent frame, then unzip the canvas flap and thread it through the other three sides of the rooftop tent frame. Flip the cover over the rooftop tent and the zip the cover to the canvas flap you just threaded into the track on the frame. Lastly, fasten everything down with the main straps.
What Should be Considered When Choose Rooftop Tent
Size
Size matters when it comes to rooftop tents. How much room do you need inside? How large is the roof or bed of your vehicle? Tents come in many sizes, from compact models that comfortably sleep two, to larger versions that can accommodate a family. Ensure the size of the tent matches the size of your vehicle's roof; an oversized tent may affect the vehicle's stability and safety.
Weight
The weight of your rooftop tent directly impacts your vehicle's performance and fuel efficiency. Most vehicles have specific roof load limits, which should not be exceeded when the vehicle is in motion. Lighter tents will have less impact on fuel consumption and handling. Consider the tent weight plus the weight of the occupants when making your decision.
Capacity
The tent should fit the number of people planning to sleep in it comfortably. If it's just you and your partner, a two-person tent will suffice. However, if you have children or camp with a group, a larger tent that can accommodate more people would be a better option.
Setup Time
The simplicity of setting up the tent can significantly impact your camping experience. After a long drive, the last thing you want is a complicated setup process. Some rooftop tents are designed with quick setup features, including pop-up or clamshell designs, while others may require more time.
Mounting Options
Mounting systems for rooftop tents vary. Some are designed to be mounted on crossbars or a roof rack, while others require specific types of racks or have vehicle-specific requirements. Make sure the tent you choose is compatible with your vehicle's setup.
Accessory Mounting Options
Additional accessories like awnings, boot bags, or annexes can enhance your camping experience. Ensure your tent design allows the attachment of these extras if you plan on using them. Our tents come with exterior channels on all sides, making it easy for you to attach accessories directly to the tent shell. This smart feature is absent in soft shell tents and adds another level of convenience and customization to your camping experience.
Materials
Tents should be sturdy and durable to withstand various weather conditions. High-quality materials, such as honeycomb aluminum shells, rip-stop fabric, are ideal. The tent's material also impacts its weight, insulation, and overall longevity. You may opt for a soft shell to keep the weight and cost down but then you're sacrificing things like longevity, setup time, durability, and more.
Interior Space
Apart from sleeping space, consider the headroom and interior space the tent provides. Being able to sit up, change clothes, or move around comfortably can significantly enhance your camping experience. While most clamshell-style tents lack in space at the foot of the tent, The Lookout Rooftop tent features 12 inches of height at the foot, which makes a huge difference compared to other clamshell-style tents.
Cost
As with any significant purchase, cost plays a role. While it's true that you often get what you pay for, it's also important to consider the value for money. High-end models come with lots of features, but if you don't need them all, a less expensive, simpler tent might serve you just as well.
Step One
Start by removing all the mattress pads, bedsheets, pillows, or blankets inside your rooftop tent. Then use a vacuum cleaner to clean the top side of your fabric. This should remove most dirt buildup from your rooftop.
Step Two
Place the mattress pads and bedding in a bucket or tub of water with a detergent solution for some minutes and place them in the washer. This will allow you to clean out all the dirt stuck deep within the fabric fibers. Use a laundry detergent that will loosen up any more dirt from deep within the fabric fibers of your roof tent pads.
Step Three
Next, water your rooftop tent thoroughly. This will help clean the fabric and get rid of dust buildup. You could use a soap/water solution to scrub out any stains or marks on the tent.
Step Four
Use a towel and cleaning solution to wipe the inside of the tent. Food or dirt can often collect between the mattress and base, so cleaning this area will keep the tent fresh. If the poles that make up your tent's frame are uncovered, you can whip those down as well.
Step Five
For a soft shell rooftop tent, the PVC cover collects dust, bugs, and mud quickly. Clean the cover off by hosing it down and scrubbing off any debris where needed. Not only do you want your tent to stay clean, but taking off a gross cover every time is not a good time.
Step Six
Cleaning your ladder is easy and necessary, especially if you have a sliding ladder. Dirt accumulates in the sliding tracks making it difficult to slide open and close! You could easily wipe it down for telescoping ladders, and it should be clean with no performance issues.
Step Seven
Allow your rooftop tent and its components to dry completely before reassembling it. If you pack the tent away when wet, mildew will begin to form. This will be noticeable from looking at it, but more so by the smell. Once it is there, it is near impossible to rid of.
Step Eight
To finish the cleaning process for your rooftop tent, put everything back in. Now you have a clean and fresh tent ready for a harsh camping season!
